In August 2025, I went back to Minnesota to reset. To see family and friends, familiar faces, and honestly just slow down and get back into a creative headspace. While I was there, I linked up with my best friend Kenny, aka K Quo, who’s a producer, singer, songwriter, and rapper. At one point he casually asked, “Do you want to make a song together?” I thought to myself, Hell Yeah. So we did.
He started showing me how he builds his beats, layer by layer, instrument by instrument. We were just vibing, listening to different sounds, and letting things happen naturally. No pressure, no expectations. Just energy. While we were experimenting, I suggested using a snippet from Amaarae’s “Big Steppa.” He was building toward an amapiano-inspired rhythm, I'd say something percussive so the confidence in Amaarae voice and the rhythm just felt right. From there, everything clicked. That session eventually turned into “Can’t Take You Home.”And the title ended up meaning more to me than I expected.
Fun fact, I’ve never brought a guy home to meet my parents. Ever. “Can’t Take You Home” reflects that part of my life. The boundaries, the independence, and the way some connections are meant to stay in their own lane. What started as a spontaneous idea turned into something really personal and something I’m genuinely proud of. That feeling is woven into every part of the song.
